Essencial Tools for Mechanical Technicians

This compilation recognizes the fundamental toolsof which mechanical technicians use to perform their tasks with precision and efficiency. These highly skilled professionals depend on a variety of versatile tools to achieve high-quality work in their field.

The tools in this list are not those of the specialist. It is unlikely that you will build a rocket ship with the stuff in here. On the contrary, this list honors the tools of the generalist. What you can accomplish with these utensils is limitless in the practical industry, enabling technicians to address a broad spectrum of tasks and challenges with proficiency and adaptability.

Note: This list focuses on mechanical work and tries to exclude woodworking and gardening.

 

  1. Basic Toolkit:

Note:Minimalistic kit, does not include heavy-duty work (which would require larger tools).

The following manual tools should fit into two 20” plastic toolboxes:

Flathead screwdrivers, Phillips screwdrivers, Allen wrenches, Torx wrenches, open-end/combination wrenches, universal pliers, needle-nose pliers, cutting pliers, locking pliers, groove joint pliers, scissors, safety utility knife with hidden edge, tapes (mask tape, transparent, insulating & silver tape), measuring tape,c clamps, hacksaw,carpenter’s square, hammers (claw and rubber), files, rivet gun.

 

  1. “Heavy Duty” additions:

Considering that work will involve larger equipment, some additional tools should be considered essential:

Larger sizes of each tool from the basic toolkit as needed:

  • E.g.:
    • Combination wrenches beyond the 7 to 22 mm range; you might need wrenches up to 55 mm or even larger).
    • Larger allen wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.

Tools added to the list:

Crowbars, socket wrenches (1/2”, 3/4”, 1”), socket adaptors (e.g. 3/4” to 1/2”),socket extension set, hex bit sockets, sledgehammer, pipe wrench,grease gun, impact wrench (if torques are too high check hydraulic wrenches).

 

  1. Workbench Tools & Electic Tools:

Bench Vice, Drill Press, Bench grinder, Combination drill, electric power drill, angle grinder.

 

  1. Essencial Metrology tools:

Torque wrench, feeler gauge, dial caliper, depth gauge, gage blocks.

 

  1. Tools “beyond essencial”:

This section extends the list with additional tools that are worth mentioning and that could be useful or serve specific purposes.

  1. Tools: Hydraulic jack, bearing puller, Ratchet screwdriver, chain wrench, circlip pliers, flogging ring spanner, spare batteries (e.g. for combination drill), centre punch, torx sockets, magnetic pick up tool, etc.
  1. Useful Consumables: The already mentioned tapes (mask tape, transparent, insulating & silver tape), bits as required, abrasive paper, WD-40, loctite, grease (e.g. EP2), zip ties, etc.

Note:

This list does not include the necessary PPE for the job. Always ensure safety by using appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety glasses, and ear protection. Follow OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), ANSI (American National Standards Institute), and any other applicable standards for workplace safety. Proper training and adherence to safety protocols are crucial to preventing accidents and injuries.
